Do you feel like you're art isn't good?

Posted by Nicknam316 - November 29th, 2023

I haven't been drawing much and lately i feel like my art isn't that good even if it's just the rough sketch of the art... Does anyone have any helpful advice to get over this mindset???

i don't know if i have any real advice, just that i think we all feel like this from time to time, no matter how much we have objectively improved, so don't give up! art is a continuous learning experience, and sometimes we feel like we are going nowhere. sometimes the key is to try a new medium or tool... and then get immediately frustrated by, kicking you out of a slump, like me trying to learn blender in november :P !

A sketch shouldn't be good, but as you progress, you might get a good art depends on how messy your sketch is

Try to see your work from another point of view. Dont compare your work to others in looks and success just be your own star.

There are two methods that seem to work for the vast majority of artists: "Practice" and "look at the work of other artists".

Humans learn skills through understanding and repetition.

If you aren't pleased with your current works, try to change something. It seems to me as if you mainly draw characters that others came up with. A potential cause for your dissatisfaction might be that those will always be viewed by others as "Character X, but different"; rather than "Nicknam316's original character 'Shiny Void'" or something.

If you want to stick with the characters you've been drawing so far then practice drawing then until you get satisfactory results.

I've also noticed the colors bleeding over here and there. Maybe try out different methods of coloring or clean up minor mistakes digitally before you upload. Which, again, is something you will have to practice.

While I don't want to sound patronizing I also have no idea how old you are, so I'll also say this: Neither your body nor your mind function like our machines do. Drink enough water, take regular breaks, maybe do some light exorcises, call a friend, watch some anime ('Blue Period' seems fitting ;) ), or do whatever you like to take you mind off of practicing your craft. If you laser-focus on doing only one thing you can ruin yourself in more ways than one.

Yes, instead of putting your focus on making good art. Have the goal be to empty out your pen(cil).

As these responses have proven, talk to other people who are feeling the same way - often we’re a lot better at supporting each other than we are at believing in ourselves. If you need more help in the future, I started an Art Forum thread for this purpose and I’ve seen a lot of people trade advice and encouragement here. I’d love to see it keep going!
